Claremont Symphony Orchestra

The Claremont Symphony Orchestra provides free concerts for the community. The orchestra has won numerous awards and provides musical leadership for the Claremont community.

About the Orchestra

The Claremont Symphony Orchestra is embarking on its fifty-third season of music. Under the leadership of Dr. James Fahringer, Music Director, and Associate Conductors Dr. Gary Iida and Professor Larry Lowder, the new season will feature an exciting variety of musical experiences for your enjoyment. Programs will feature new and returning soloists as well as a special celebration of American music in the spring.

The Claremont Symphony Orchestra and the Claremont Youth Symphony Orchestra are both administered by the Board of Directors of the CSO Association (Barbara Bonzo, President). Founded in 1953 by George Denes, the orchestra was originally sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Claremont and the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Claremont as an extension of the music program of the Claremont schools through the Adult School. Now a non-profit organization dependent completely on donations, the mission of the orchestra is for local musicians to bring music to the community free of charge. The orchestra is a member of the Association of California Symphony Orchestras.

Each season has at least eight concerts provided free to the community. There are five symphonic performances normally held at 3:30 p.m. at the Bridges Hall of Music on the Pomona College campus (on Fourth Street) in Claremont. There is also an annual Community Sing of Handel's Messiah on the Sunday before Christmas, a Children's Concert on a Saturday morning in January, and a July concert on a Monday evening in Claremont's Memorial Park, 840 N. Indian Hill Blvd., in Claremont. Over the years the orchestra has received a number of awards for performance and programming.

The Claremont Youth Symphony was founded in 1983 to enrich the musical program of the schools. Over the years Dr. Fahringer and various members of the Claremont Symphony have taught orchestral playing to some hundred young people annually.
